Let’s hope we never need to fight off an attacker – but if you were at Serenity’s recent  Self-Defense for Women workshop, you probably feel a lot better equipped if you ever had to. Our self-defense and martial arts expert Judy Walden’s workshop was hands-on (we even used feet and elbows!). Here’s some of what you missed:

We learned that our first step in self-defense

is to be aware of what’s going on around us. Judy told us to look confident, chest and head up, and keep scanning the area around us. Predators are looking for people who aren’t paying attention. If you’re attacked, she said, throw away your purse. If the guy’s just after the money, he’ll go for it and you have time to get away.

If you have to walk in a dark, lonely area,  don’t be afraid to ask for an escort before you leave. If you can’t get one and you really, really have to go there, carry your keys sticking out between your fingers. You might be able to use them for self-defense and — at the least, you won’t have to fumble around in your purse for them while you’re standing in the dark outside the car.

If you do get grabbed, for the groin with your knee, or jab your finders in the eyes, thrust the heel of your hand up under his nose or into his Adam’s apple, or take both palms and slam them against his ears with all your might. You’re looking for a momentary loosening of the grip, so you can escape. Don’t be dainty — and don’t fight fair. If your hands don’t work, you’ve got elbows, knees, and feet.
