What every woman should know about osteoporosis

Heart and Souls the movie The Beguiled film It’s your one-stop place for the what we need to know about this potentially debilitating condition. In this free 1-hour workshop at Serenity Fitness Club on Saturday, March 21 at noon, you’ll get information you can share with your daughters, sisters, girlfriends, and mothers. We’ll talk about what the numbers from your bone scan mean (and why you want to get a scan!) and how much calcium you really need. We’ll address both osteoporosis and osteopenia (the forerunner of osteoporosis). You’ll learn the risk factors for osteoporosis — the ones you can’t change AND the ones you can. You’ll leave knowing the questions you need to ask your doctor — about exercise, drugs, and supplements. You’ll be better informed about bone health for women from adolescence to advanced age.

Wear workout clothes. We’ll practice some balance exercises for fall prevention and show you how to move safely at home and at the gym.

Let’s hope we never need to fight off an attacker – but if you were at Serenity’s recent Self-Defense for Women workshop, you probably feel a lot better equipped if you ever had to. Our self-defense and martial arts expert Judy Walden’s workshop was hands-on (we even used feet and elbows!). Here’s some of what you missed:

We learned that our first step in self-defense

is to be aware of what’s going on around us. Judy told us to look confident, chest and head up, and keep scanning the area around us. Predators are looking for people who aren’t paying attention. If you’re attacked, she said, throw away your purse. If the guy’s just after the money, he’ll go for it and you have time to get away.

If you have to walk in a dark, lonely area, don’t be afraid to ask for an escort before you leave. If you can’t get one and you really, really have to go there, carry your keys sticking out between your fingers. You might be able to use them for self-defense and — at the least, you won’t have to fumble around in your purse for them while you’re standing in the dark outside the car.

If you do get grabbed, for the groin with your knee, or jab your finders in the eyes, thrust the heel of your hand up under his nose or into his Adam’s apple, or take both palms and slam them against his ears with all your might. You’re looking for a momentary loosening of the grip, so you can escape. Don’t be dainty — and don’t fight fair. If your hands don’t work, you’ve got elbows, knees, and feet.
